Isezaki Youtarou 伊勢崎 陽太郎
Isezaki Youtarou was born in Bizen, son of a traditional potter known for tea ware, in 1995. He graduate Hanazono University in Kyoto before enrolling at the Tajimi Pottery Design Technical Institute. He makes use of ancient inherited techniques, modern graphics, and a century of technological innovation in transfer ware. The works are hand-built, slabbed and trimmed then bisk fired. He then creates a print transfer which is applied to the low-fired surface, and further burnishes it before glazing and re-firing.
The female characters on his bowl are generated entirely by himself through his interaction with AI based on Manga and Pop-culture. On the reverse side of the transfer, what appears at first glance to be a scratch is actually an email address, password, or some other symbol of the present day. The miniature photo series are actually taken from his phone, a very personal view into his world and commentary on the public nature of the modern times we live in, and each is dated to the era in which the photos were taken.
He says another interesting point is that you cannot know what the finished product will look like until it has been fired. “Because you can't imagine how it will turn out until you open the kiln, in a way I am letting nature take its course. The original color and the color of the finished piece are very different”.
