The works of Hattori Shunsho
2025.04.26 - 06.02
We are excited to bring you our latest exhibition, Geometry, showcasing the lacquer work of Hattori Shunsho (1943-2018). The son of a fabric business owner, Hattori was encouraged by his middle school art teacher to enroll in the lacquer arts program in high school. He studied under many prominent artists before debuting at the 17th Kyoto Craft Art Exhibition and quickly became a regular exhibitor, both at home in Japan and also abroad.
Hattori Shunsho's artistic legacy lies not only in his command of traditional Japanese lacquer techniques but in his deep engagement with geometry as a tool for expression and transformation. His works are a compelling dialogue between centuries-old craft and modern design language, particularly through his inventive use of form, line, and material. Hattori's aesthetic vision is marked by the tension and harmony between symmetry and asymmetry, organic and artificial; his work bridges the divide between the elegance of tradition and the boundary-pushing of contemporary art.
The exhibition will run from April 26th to June 2nd. We hope you are able to stop by the gallery or check out the collection and catalogue online!
