Suzuki Yusaku 鈴木優作

Suzuki Yusaku (b. 1991) was born in Aichi Prefecture, central Japan, and graduated from the Ceramics Course at Nagoya Zokei University in 2014. During his youth, Suzuki struggled with interpersonal relationships, often feeling isolated and constrained. In the latter half of his sophomore year at university, he began drawing as a means of release. As he explains, “By drawing my emotions on paper, I can momentarily release them from my body. It’s like transferring data to a hard drive.”

Nagoya Zokei University’s open studio environment allowed students from various disciplines to freely access the ceramics facilities. Through sharing his drawings with peers from different fields, Suzuki received both criticism and guidance, experiences that played a crucial role in shaping his artistic language. Drawing and ceramics gradually became parallel practices through which he could process and transcend his inner turmoil. As a result, many of his early works are marked by a stark, unsettling atmosphere.

The works presented feature two distinct drawing systems. In his humanoid forms, Suzuki establishes a core at the position of the heart, from which patterns branch outward like blood vessels across the body. These surfaces are composed of scale-like motifs arranged in a deliberately reversed order. The second system consists of interwoven, string-like elements. Both approaches are governed by algorithmic rules, which Suzuki follows rigorously throughout the making process. Through this disciplined structure, his works balance emotional intensity with formal control, transforming personal experience into a highly systematic and compelling visual language.
