Suzuki Yusaku 鈴木優作
Suzuki Yusaku was born in Aichi prefecture in central Japan in 1991 and graduated the Nagoya Zokei University Ceramics Course in 2014. In his youth, Yusaku struggled with interpersonal relationships, and states that he felt quite isolated and oppressed. He started drawing in the latter half of his sophomore year in college. In his own words, 'By drawing my emotions on paper, I can momentarily release them from my body. It's like transferring data to a hard drive.'" His university allowed artists from various fields to freely use the ceramics studio. During this time, he showed his drawings to students from various fields and received both criticism and advice, which helped shape his current style. Drawing and pottery became his means of channeling and transcending these despondent feelings. Working through his experiences, many of his early works were characterized by a bleak or frightening atmosphere.
The works here feature two distinct drawing patterns. The first pattern, used in humanoid pieces, involves creating a core at the heart's location, with designs branching out like blood vessels across the body. This design is composed of scales arranged in a reversed manner. The second pattern involves intertwining string-like parts. Both designs follow algorithmic patterns, and he faithfully adheres to these rules to complete his creations.
