Kaneta Masanao 兼田 正尚

Kaneta Masanao is one of the most renowned and instantly recognizable figures in contemporary Hagi ceramics. An eighth-generation potter inheriting a deeply conservative tradition, he has consistently transcended its limitations and was among the first to carry Hagi ware decisively into the 21st century.

His work is characterized by a dynamic tension between function and form, as well as between inherited technique and innovation. While remaining firmly grounded in tradition, Kaneta’s ceramics assert a sculptural presence that challenges conventional expectations of Hagi ware.

Kaneta has exhibited extensively both nationally and internationally, including participation in major exhibitions such as the Nihon Dentō Kōgei Ten and Nihon Tōgei Ten. His works are held in important public collections, including the National Museum of Modern Art, Tokyo; the Yamaguchi Prefectural Museum; and the Brooklyn Museum of Art, among others.
