A begging bowl made in the light weight dry-lacquer technique covered in rich black lacquer adorned with a zen phrase in crimson characters enclosed in an age darkened Kiri-wood box annotated by a master of Zen or tea (priest or chajin, often both) and bearing their Kao signature. Later 19th to early 20th century, it is 14 cm (5-1/2 inches) diameter, 8 cm (3-1/4 inches) tall and in perfect condition.
