An unusually tall bottle of undecorated clay dating circa 1700 from the Ryukyu Kingdom of modern day Okinawa. This unglazed pottery was called Arayachi (among other things). Arayachi is unglazed pottery which developed from trade with Southeast Asia in the 15th and 16th centuries and was inspired by exposure to that region's method of making storage jars. This shape is very unusual, ordinarily the bottle is shorter, and this elongated type is rare and considered perfect for the humble aesthetic of the Japanese Tea Room, making this type of bottle very popular in Japan. It is 22 cm (8-1/2 inches) tall and in overall fine condition, with minor blemishes typical of age, enclosed in a period wood box.
