Undulating wave patterns are carved into the perfect surface of this vessel by Terui Ichigen enclosed in the original signed wooden box titled Seihakuji Tsubo, Mizu no Naka. It is 25 cm (10 inches) diameter, roughly the same height, and in perfect condition.
Terui Ichigen (Kazuyoshi) was born in Iwate Prefecture in Northern Japan in 1943. While a student at the prestigious Waseda University, he became fascinated with pottery, spending his free months in Arita, and after graduating from the Faculty of Education, decided he would make pottery his career. He entered the studio of Okugawa Chuuemon and then, after Chuuemon fell ill, future Living National Treasure Inoue Manji. He established his own studio in 1981. His work has been selected for the Japan Traditional Crafts Exhibition as well as the Nitten national Art Exhibition. He has also been exhibited in Norway, Germany and he is held in the collection of the British Museum.
