A striking vessel by contemporary pottery giant Hoshino Satoru enclosed in the original signed wooden box titled Haru no Yuki (Spring Snow). It is roughly 31 cm (12 inches) diameter 36.5 cm (14-1/2 inches) tall and in excellent condition.
Hoshino Satoru was born in Niigata Prefecture in 1945, and graduated from Ritsumeikan University in Kyoto in 1971 before studying ceramics at the Fujihira Pottery. From 1974 to 1980, he was a member of the influential avant-garde ceramic movement Sōdeisha, where he developed the sculptural language that would define his career. Since 1981, he has been a member of the International Academy of Ceramics. Although his studio was destroyed in a landslide in 1986, he rebuilt his practice and has continued to produce works exploring the relationship between form, surface, and the natural world. Work by him is held in a plethora of important institutions including the Aichi Prefectural Ceramic Museum, Kyoto Municipal Museum of Art, Kyoto National Museum of Modern Art, Shiga Prefectural Museum of Modern Art, Wakayama Museum of Modern Art, Gifu Museum of Modern Ceramic Art, Takamatsu Art Museum, The Tokyo National Museum of Modern Art, Shigaraki Ceramic Cultural Park, Yamaguchi Prefectural Art Museum,Ariana Museum (Switzerland), Bertoran Museum (France), Everson Museum of Art (USA), Faenza International Museum of Ceramics (Italy), National Gallery of Australia, Hamilton Art Gallery (Australia) Kerameikmuseum Princesshof (Netherlands) The Minneapolis Institute of Arts (USA), Victoria & Albert Museum (UK) and Yingge Ceramics Museum in Taiwanamong many others.
