A classical tea room vase by Takimoto Kokyu covered in flying ash glaze running over the scorched gray and ember scarred surface enclosed in the original signed wooden box titled Shigaraki Uzukumaru. The rugged vessel is engraved about the shoulder with the traditional Higaki motif. Stylistically it reflects the wabi aesthetic of the tea room. Carefully crafted and precisely placed in the front of the kiln next to the Oki (Ember pile), it appears nonchalant. It is 18 cm (7inches) diameter, 20.5 cm (8 inches) tall and in excellent condition.

Takimoto Kokyu was born in Hyogo prefecture in 1947, and spent his youth learning pottery in various traditions throughout Japan. He moved to Shigaraki in 1979, focusing on revival of ancient forms and techniques.
