Scholar Studio Decoration, Natural Stone Pod, Fossil?

Hard to believe, but this actually appears to be the fossilized Tympanic bullae or ear structure (Ear Bone) of an ancient whale. It is solid as stone, 13.5 x 8 x 8.5 cm (roughly 5-1/2 inches long) and comes enclosed in an old wooden collector’s box.
