Geese among water reeds call to the late autumn moon on this deeply carved Sanuki style lacquered tray by Takahashi Kanzan enclosed in the original signed wooden box dating from the late Meji period. It is 35 x 47 x 3 cm (14 x 18-1/2 x 1-1/4 inches) and is in overall excellent condition, with some wear on the base consistent with use. Kanzan’s carving was renowned for its extraordinary precision and the crisp, incisive quality of his chisel work, qualities that were regarded as unmatched in his day. Alongside Ishii Keidō, he was celebrated as one of the "twin pillars of carving.
