A sophisticated image of Seitaku Doji in typical black finish dating from the mid Edo period. Seitaka Dōji is a youthful attendant of Fudō Myōō, one of the central deities in Japanese Esoteric Buddhism. Carved from a It has been mounted on a modern lacquered wooden stand. The image itself is 35 cm (14 inches) tall and in excellent condition, the stand alone is 28.5 x 25.5 x 9 cm (11-1/4 x 10 x 3-1/2 inches). It has been fully cleaned by the reputable Matsuhisa Buddhist Carving Studio this year.

Seitaka Dōji is typically depicted alongside his counterpart Kongara Dōji, flanking Fudō as part of a triad. He is usually shown with a more refined, sometimes stern or intelligent expression and is understood to embody disciplined wisdom and clarity. In contrast to the fiercer or more wrathful aspects of Fudō Myōō, these attendants present a more accessible intermediary presence, guiding practitioners and symbolizing the harnessing of inner forces toward enlightenment. In iconography, Seitaka often appears slightly older or more composed than Kongara Dōji. Together, the two attendants represent complementary spiritual qualities—devotion and insight—supporting Fudō’s role as an immovable protector who cuts through ignorance and leads beings toward awakening.
