A very difficult to acquire Shigaraki Pottery Jar of thick clay covered in natural ash glaze dating from the Muromachi period (14th to 16th centuries). It is roughly 26 cm (0ver 10 inches) diameter, 33 cm (13 inches tall). A crack extends from the rim down both sides, one splitting into an inverted Y shape.
This is from the collection of a household formerly of samurai status, which, unlike many families, maintained its power over the centuries, into the modern age. The collection encompassed a great many antique and early modern Tea related works, Bronzes, porcelains and Lacquer wares. Without a successor in the current age, the collection was dispersed this Spring.
