Puppies frolic in the snow on this early two panel screen by Nishimura Goun. The style strongly reflects the style of his teacher, Takeuchi Seiho. Nishimura Goun (1877-1938) was a Kyoto painter apprenticed in the orthodox school under Kishi Chikudo and later in the Western hybrid by Takeuchi Seiho, that artists influence apparent here. Member of the Imperial Art Academy. Prized at the first Bunten. Judge for the Teiten. Held in the Kyoto Museum of Modern Art and National Museum of Modern Art among others.
