An exquisite modernist painting with minimal imagery of Iwa-Tsubame (Asian House Martin) soaring through a white sky by Nagano Sofu enclosed in the original singed double wood box (niju-bako). Pigment on silk in a fine silk border with solid ivory rollers (these will be changed for export). It is 66.5 x 209.5 cm (26 x 82-1/2 inches) and in excellent condition.
Nagano Sofu (1885-1949) was born in Tokyo and studied under Murata Tanryo, and later Kawai Gyokudo at which time he received the name Sofu. He studied traditional Yamato-e at the Kojikai with Kobori Tomoto, Matsumoto Fuko, Imamura Shiko and Yasuda Yukihiko. He was accepted into the Bunten immediately upon its founding in 1907, winning a prize at the first show. He also exhibited with the Inten from 1914.
