A hammered metal sculpture on a heavy marble stand by Kobayashi Shomin enclosed in the original signed wooden box titled Mother & Child. It is total 60.5 cm (2 feet) tall, the statue itself 48.5 cm (19 inches) tall and is in excellent condition. With the stand it weighs 10.4 kg (23 pounds).

Kobayashi Shomin (1912-1994) was born in Aomori City, given name Kunio. He first gained recognition in 1940 when his work was accepted into the 2600th Anniversary Commemorative Exhibition. Subsequently, his works were accepted into the 4th and 5th Shin-Bunten (New Bunten Art Exhibition). Starting from the 2nd Nitten (Japan Fine Arts Exhibition), he consistently participated in the exhibition. In 1952 (Showa 27), he created the metal fittings for the restoration of the Kikusui-hoko float for the Gion Festival. In 1954 (Showa 29), his "Yokkō Tetsu Uchide Okimono" (Basking in Light – Iron Hammered Sculpture) was exhibited at the 10th Nitten and earned him the Hokuto-sho Award. In 1964 "Sōsei" (Creation) was exhibited at the 7th Nitten, earning him the Kikuka Award. In 1979 (Showa 54), he became a founding member of the Japan New Craft Artists Association. In 1985 he was received the order of cultural merit from Kyoto Prefecture. In 1989 he became a founding member of the Kyoto Craft Exhibition, and in 1991 he became a founding member of the Japan Craft Association (Nikkōkai). His large-scale works include "Hammered Aluminum – Swan" created in 1979 to commemorate the 80th anniversary of Aomori City's incorporation now housed in the Aomori City Museum of Art.
