Toyoshima Kaijo was a native of Owari. His given name was Kaijo, his courtesy name Gokyo, and he used the same name, Kaijo, as his art name. He was a calligrapher, Nanga (Southern School) painter, and Chinese-style poet. Three of his seven-character quatrains were included in Tōkyō saijin zekkū (Tokyo Talents in Verse), compiled by Mori Shuntō in 1876 (Meiji 9). He also published Daiga Jizai (On the Freedom of Inscribing Paintings) in 1880 (Meiji 13) and Atami Onsen Zue (Illustrated Views of the Atami Hot Springs) in 1888 (Meiji 21).
