Fishing by Moonlight, 1922 Silk Scroll ー矢野 橋村 “柳陰捕魚図”

A fisherman reaches out with a long net while egrets take flight under the risign moon from the sheltering branches of willow trees on this beautiful Taisho period painting by Yano Kyoson enclosed in the original signed wooden box dated 1922 and titled Ryuin Hogyo (Catching Fish Under Willows). It is performed with Ink and pigment on silk wrapped in a pale green Kinran border shot with gold thread patterns terminating in solid ivory rollers. The rollers will be changed for export. The scroll is 50 x 203 cm (20 x 80 inches) and is in overall fine condition.

Yano Kyoson (1890-1965) was born in Ehime prefecture, on the Island of Shikoku, and studied under Nakamatsu Shunyo. He exhibited consistently with the Nihon Nanga-in, of which he was a founding member. He also was consistently presented at the Bunten and Teiten National Exhibition, where he served as a Juror, and later at the Nitten. His work is held in the collection of the National Museum of Modern Art Tokyo, as well as any number of important private collections.
