A deeply patinated wooden root stand, one of the best I have ever seen) carved and hollowed out from a single piece of burled wood and enclosed in a period wooden box dating from the 19th century or earlier. It is 62 x 33 x 5.5 cm (25 x 13 x 2 inches) and is in overall excellent condition, with age cracks typical of a long life.
This is from the collection of a household formerly of samurai status, which, unlike many families, maintained its power over the centuries, into the modern age. The collection encompassed a great many antique and early modern Tea related works, Bronzes, porcelains and Lacquer wares. Without a successor in the current age, the collection was dispersed this Spring.
