Radical grain undulations swirl about forming this wood basin mildly worked into the shape of a leaf (Habon) for use in the Sencha Tea aesthetic. It is 43 x 23 x 4 cm (17 x 9 x 1-1/2 inches) and is in excellent condition. The motif of the banana leaf (shōyō) has long been associated with literati culture. In East Asia, the banana plant appears in paintings and poetry as a symbol of quiet study, impermanence, and the sound of rain—the soft patter on broad leaves evoking introspection and solitude. The piece evokes a moment suspended in time: a fleeting thought held against the enduring grain of wood.
