Courtly figures in shimmering clouds encircle this heavily gilded vessel dating from the later 19th century marked "Dai Nippon Nishida Zo" (Made by Nishida, of Great Japan). This refers to ceramics produced during the Meiji period (1868–1912) by the Nishida workshop in Kyoto. It is 8 cm (just more than 3 inches) diameter, 21.5 cm (8-1/2 inches) tall and in perfect condition, enclosed in a custom Kiri-wood box.
Kyo-Satsuma blended traditional Satsuma ware techniques with Kyoto's refined decoration styles, featuring intricate gold paint (Kinrande) and highly detailed human figures.
