This is identical in clay density and coloring of Andon Zara (lantern plates) manufactured in the 19th century. It is unusual in that it is clearly made impressed over a mold with a broad leaf pattern, something I have not seen before in this style. Also, unlike typical Andon Zara which have a wide foot or are left raw in the center of the base, the foot on this plate is thin and quite beautifully rendered. The dish is 25 cm (10 inches) diameter, 2.5 cm (1 inch) tall and in excellent condition, enclosed in an old utilitarian wooden storage box.
