An Early Vase showing European design influence by Kusube Yaichi enclosed in the original signed wooden box. The glaze is a metallic blue-black outside with distinct Western design elements in the form. It is 13 cm (5-1/4 inches) diameter, 32 cm (12-1/2 inches) tall and in perfect condition.
Kusube Yaichi (1897 – 1984) was born in Kyoto, the cultural heart of Japan, and came of age in the tomoltuoys Taisho era, a time of great artistic innovation. He entered the Kyoto Ceramic Research Center in 1912 where he would study alongside Kawai Kanjiro and Yagi Isso. He established his own studio in 1918, and worked to establish the group Akatsuchi-sha in 1920. In 1924 he was awarded at the Paris Exposition Universalle. He was first accepted into the new crafts division of the Nitten Natioanl Exhibition in 1927, and would exhibit there consistently, garnering a number of prizes. He was named a member of the Japan Art Association in 1962 and was awarded the Order of Cultural Merit for his life work in 1978. The National Museums of Modern Art, both in Tokyo and Kyoto hold a plethora of his work spanning his career as well as the Museum of Fine Arts in Boston.
