An outstanding ash encrusted vessel in the shape of a gourd from die hard Iga potter Umehara Iasumu enclosed in the original signed wooden box titled Iga Hyogata Hanaire.It is 20 cm (8 inches) tall, 11.5 cm (4-1/2 inches) diameter, and in perfect condition.
Isamu Umehara was born in Osaka in 1946, and first worked as a graphic designer from the age of 18 to 25. He then spent 18 months backpacking around the world, visiting 33 countries, returning to Japan in 1973 to begin down the path of a potter.He opened his kiln in Gifu in 1976, moving in 1980 to construct a new kiln in his current locale. He concentrates on Mino and Ash glazed works, and among them this is a masterpiece.
