Suzuki Chikuhosai was a prominent Japanese bamboo master and basket weaver (kagoshi) from Nagoya who was active during the Showa period. He is highly regarded in the world of Japanese tea ceremony for creating exceptional bamboo flower baskets and vases. His artistry aligns with the refined traditions practiced by prestigious lineages like Kuroda Shogen (the designated bamboo artisan for the Senke tea schools).Chikuhosai specialized in Karamono-utsushi (replicating or drawing inspiration from intricate Chinese-style baskets imported centuries ago) and Togumi (rattan weaving). His work is celebrated for its precise, delicate weaves balanced with a rustic, airy elegance. He utilized high-quality bamboo that accentuates natural textures. These pieces are designed to age beautifully over time, developing a deep, rich patina.
