Children in colorful robes gather to play on this vertical silk canvas mounted as a scroll. Pigment on silk in a fresh green silk border with gold thread and featuring bone rollers. It is 46 x 182 cm (18-1/4 x 71-1/2 inches). There is some general foxing to the entire image.
Nozoe Heibei (1895-1980) was a Nihonga painter born in Shiga Prefecture, his given name was Jirō. He studied under Kikuchi Hōbun and Keigetsu. He was active in the Teiten, Shin-Bunten, and Nitten exhibitions. He also worked on fusuma (sliding door) paintings for the Kyoto Imperial Palace’s Kogosho and for Zuihō-in at Daitokuji Temple. He resided in Kyoto. He passed away in 1980 (Shōwa 55) at the age of 85. Work by him is held in the Tokyo National Museum of Modern Art among others.
