A seminal work of art, this realistic nyoi carving is made to duplicate the feeling of bamboo, yet is actually carved from a burled branch of fruitwood, complete to the porous end of the cut bamboo root. It takes its inspiration from the organic irregularity of a bamboo root, yet its form is the result of deliberate artistry rather than natural excavation. The artisan has translated the language of growth rings, nodes, and swelling joints into wood with remarkable sensitively—capturing the tension between rugged vitality and refined surface. The shaft undulates gently, echoing the natural rhythm of bamboo’s segmented structure, while the gnarled, cloud-like head retains the abstract, auspicious presence long associated with the ruyi sceptre. It is 8.5 x 44 x 6.5 cm (3-1/2 x 17-1/2 x 2-1/2 inches) and is in excellent condition.
As an embodiment of Wabi–Sabi and the Aesthetics of Wildness with its weathered, humble, unrefined presence, its aged surface patina evokes a quiet loneliness. Its untouched natural form and organic irregularity suggests hidden worlds or spirits in nature. To own such a piece implied not wealth but refinement of perception—the cultivated ability to see mountains in miniature and eternity in decay.
Traditionally associated with Buddhist clergy and literati culture, the nyoi symbolised fulfilled wishes (wish-granting), intellectual authority, and the gentle persuasion of wisdom rather than force. In this interpretation, the carved form of a bamboo root further evokes scholarly ideals: resilience, upright character, humility, and a life aligned with nature’s rhythms.
