A Later Edo Fresh water jar for use in the Japanese Tea Ceremony from the kilns of Tamba, one of the Rokkoyo, or six ancient kilns, in Hyogo prefecture. Signature green glaze runs in rivulets down from the oblong rim over raw red clay. A wave pattern circles the rim under two lug handles, the once rounded from squared and compressed. Inside the walls are entirely worked with incised overlapping wave patterns, a surprise for the user. It features a lacquered lid in reddish brown custom made to fit the egg shaped opening, and comes in a period wooden storage box.
This is from the collection of a household formerly of samurai status, which, unlike many families, maintained its power over the centuries, into the modern age. The collection encompassed a great many antique and early modern Tea related works, Bronzes, porcelains and Lacquer wares. Without a successor in the current age, the collection was dispersed this Spring.
