A very unusual polished knurl of root wood containing a black stone in a shape reminiscent of the Bodhidaruma, founder of Zen practice in China and Japan. This type of object is called Ishi-daku or Ishigami, and reflects the deep rooted Japanese appreciation for natural phenomena. The figure, seated in meditation, rests in a lovingly polished root-wood “cave”. It is 11 x 14 x 17 cm (4-1/4 x 5-1/2 x 7 inches) and is in excellent condition.
