A black speckled red ladybug clings to the broad leaves forming this heavy bronze vase dating from the early to mid-20th century and enclosed in the original signed wooden box titled Shudo Fuki Kabin (Red Bronze Butterbur Vase). This is based on the Butterbur leaf, a broad leafed plant with edible stalks, which are cooked in simmered dishes, pickles, and other traditional foods. In art and design, the large heart-shaped leaves of the butterbur often symbolize Seasonal awareness (kisetsukan), Spring and renewal. It is signed on the base and inside the box lid what appears to be Yasushi. The vase is a 21 cm globe (8-1/2 inches diameter) and weighs 3.75 kilograms (8 pounds). It is in fine condition.
