A five piece stacking set of lacquered boxes in espousing the austere traditions of Japan where the outside is simple mirror polished black lacquer, while the rims, unseen while stacked, are vivid mother of pearl and the interior a festive crimson lacquer. Stacked the set is 21.7 x 20 x 32 cm (8-1/2 x 8 x 13 inches) and is in overall excellent condition. It comes enclosed in the original lacquered wooden storage box signed on bottom Kujakuya Rihei and dated a fortuitous day in the 9th month of Meiji 36 (1903). There is an extra lid included sot that the set can be used as two.
