A box cut from layer upon layer of solid lacquer carved in relief with a saint riding an elephant with his entourage alongside and polished down to a beautiful soft sheen. A seal inside the lid reading Hosui identifies the artist. From the Kagawa lacquer tradition, the box is 15 x 22.5 x 4 cm (6 x 9 x 1-1/2 inches) and is in excellent condition, enclosed in the original age darkened kiri-wood box titled Kanshitsu Suzuri-bako.
