An early incense case once covered in gold, now largely worn away revealing the black lacquer coating enclosed in an ancient kiri-wood box dating from the 17th century (late Momyama to early Edo period). Inside is a subdued burnt red cinnabar. It is 7 cm (just less than 3 inches) diameter, 5 cm (2 inches) tall and in overall fine condition, with a few minor losses consistent with age.
