An amazing set of Edo period stacking lacquer boxes, each with its own lid, and each with a different technique and design, dating from the later 18th to early 19th century, each piece wrapped in a cloth pouch and enclosed in a tiered black lacquered wooden box with a locking hinged-door. This certainly shows the high value with which this set was held. Each box is literally covered in designs in genuine powdered gold and silver. The inside is a festive cinnabar red, while the bottoms are togidashi nashiji. The bottom box is 24 x 22.5 x 9.5 cm (9-1/2 x 9 x 3-3/4 inches), the other three tiers are 24 x 22.5 x 8 cm (9-1/2 x 9 x 3-i/4 inches) each and all are in overall fine condition, with very minor blemishes typical of use.
