A fabulous work of blue and white porcelain nearly entirely covered with black and green lacquer with gold maki-e shippo designs. This ware is called Totai-Shikki or Pottery cored Lacquer. Only the inside of the foot ring and lid ring are raw porcelain, both revealing a dragon in sometsuke blue. A family crest is emblazoned inside the basin with gold on green, and windows about the elaborate outside feature stylized dragons. The bowl is 17 cm (7 inches) diameter, 8 cm (3 inches) tall plus lid, and is in excellent condition, dating from the mid 19th century (Late Edo to Meiji period).
