Kaga Gekka (given name Tsunajirō) was born in 1888 in Kuwana, Mie Prefecture and he devoted himself to reviving the Banko ware kilns, a ceramic tradition long renowned as a specialty product of Kuwana. Establishing his own kiln in the Akasuka district, he studied the styles of early Banko ware and continued to develop that tradition throughout his career. Beginning in 1929, his works were accepted year after year to the Teiten (Imperial Art Exhibition) and Bunten exhibitions. He also exhibited at the Japan Art Association exhibitions and the Ministry of Commerce and Industry Craft Exhibitions, among others, where he received numerous awards and accolades.
