A beautifully rendered image of the mythical Baku (Dream Eater) with its cub dating from 19th century Japan Buddhist carving traditions. It has darkened naturally with age, as evidenced by the light color of the wood beneath in comparison to the upper , more exposed surface. The carving is 10 x 14.5 x 13.5 cm (4 x 5-3/4 x 5-1/4 inches). The tip of the mother creatures right tusk has been broken off, otherwise they are in excellent condition.
The Baku is a mythical creature in Japanese Buddhist and folkloric tradition best known as a devourer of bad dreams. Its image and meaning entered Japan through Chinese sources and were gradually naturalized into Japanese religious belief, visual culture, and everyday custom. The Baku derives from the Chinese Mo, a legendary animal described in classical texts as a composite beast—often said to have the trunk of an elephant, eyes of a rhinoceros, body of a bear, and claws of a tiger. In Japan, this hybrid form was retained but stylized, especially in Edo-period imagery. Over time, the Baku came to resemble an elephant-like creature, though its exact appearance was never fixed. In Japan, the Baku became closely associated with sleep, dreams, and spiritual protection. According to popular belief, a person troubled by a nightmare could invoke the Baku to consume it, thereby preventing misfortune or illness that might follow from bad dreams. This belief reflects a broader Buddhist and folk understanding of dreams as spiritually potent—capable of influencing fate, health, and moral balance. During the Edo period, when interest in yōkai imagery, dream interpretation, and talismanic objects flourished, the Baku became especially popular.
