A set of two small open boxes made from the black lacquered plates of an ancient suit of armor, bound in the corners with noduled bamboo.  Each contains a ceramic Hi-ire for a burning coal and a bamboo pipe tap set into a rosewood base with matching rosewood lid.  These are a particularly rich and resonant context for mono no aware because the object carries within it a lived past that has been fundamentally transformed. Mono no aware is a foundational aesthetic concept in Japanese culture, often translated as “the pathos of things” or “a sensitivity to ephemerality.” At its core, it describes a quiet, deeply felt awareness that all things are transient—and that this very impermanence is what makes them beautiful. Not simply sadness, it is a more nuanced emotional state:
a gentle, almost tender response to the passing of time. The feeling is both appreciative and wistful—a recognition that beauty exists precisely because it cannot last. Armor, once an instrument of survival and violence, is here reconfigured into an object of repose, something that supports a moment of quiet leisure. This shift is not merely practical; it is existential. The object has passed from a world of urgency and mortal stakes into one of contemplation and refinement. Mono no aware emerges in that transition—the recognition that even the most resolute forms of human intention are not fixed, but subject to time, reinterpretation, and softening. Unlike newly made objects, these trays retain the trace of prior use. These are not flaws but carriers of memory. The viewer senses, even if abstractly, the lives once intertwined with the material, the conflicts now long dissolved. The material remains, but its meaning has shifted. This gap between what it was and what it is now produces a subtle emotional tension: a recognition that time not only erodes, but reassigns. Mono no aware resides precisely in this awareness: that what was once immediate and vital has become distant, and that distance is both melancholic and beautiful. Each is 18 x 18 x 11 cm (7 x 7 x 4-1/4 inches) and both are in overall fine condition, inside an age darkened compartmentalized wooden box.
