Green glass pools in the center of this flaring summer tea bowl by Suzuki Hachiro enclosed in the original signed wooden box titled Seto Anagama Chawan. It is 16.5 cm (6-1/2 inches) diameter, 8cm (just over 3 inches) tall and in excellent condition.
Suzuki Hachiro was a student of the great Kogei artist Fujii Tatsukichi. Prior to the second world war his work was exhibited at the Bunten and went to Manchuria to study pottery from 1944 to 1945. Following the cessation of hostilities, he exhibited with the Newly reformed Nitten National Exhibition. He then expanded his repertoire, being accepted into the National Modern Ceramics Exhibition, Seto Ceramics Exhibition among others garnering many awards leading up to his acceptance five times to exhibit at the Metropolitan Museum of Art in New York in the Modern Japanese Crafts Expositions held there.
