A large Tsubo by Ichino Shigeyoshi covered in rivulets of blue slat glaze enclosed in the original signed wooden box titled Ai-Shio-yu O-Tsubo.It is 33 cm (13 inches) tall, 28 cm (11 inches) diameter and in perfect condition. This piece was featured in his 12th exhibition at Mitsukoshi Department store in 1994, image number 27 in the catalog (included).
Ichino Shigeyoshi (1942-2011) was born in the ancient pottery village of Tamba, the eldest son of potter Ichino Tanso. Studied under his father, in 1969 he went to study at the Leach Pottery in St Ives, England, and after a year there embarked on a tour of Europe. With friend John Bedding held a joint exhibition in Villenaux, France. After his return to Japan in 1973 he held simultaneous one-man exhibitions in Japan and London. In 1979 he would host John Bedding for a year at the Ichino pottery studying traditional Japanese techniques.
