An elegant covered urn in raw white clay decorated with a bursting peony flower in red by Ueda Tetsuya enclosed in the original signed wooden box. It is 22.5 cm 89 inches) diameter, 23 cm tall and in excellent condition.
Born in Kumamoto Prefecture in 1953, Ueda Tetsuya completed his graduate studies in ceramics at Tokyo University of the Arts in 1979, where he studied under Living National Treasures Fujimoto Yoshimichi and Tamura Kōichi, as well as Professor Emeritus Asano Yō. He established his independent studio in Hayama, Kanagawa, in 1981 and later relocated to Ashina, Yokosuka, where he continues to work. A full member of the Japan Kōgei Association since 1989, Ueda has been consistently selected for both the Japan Traditional Art Crafts Exhibition and the Traditional Art Crafts New Works Exhibition. His honors include the TVK Television Prize (1998), the Encouragement Prize at the Traditional Art Crafts New Works Exhibition (2000), and the Encouragement Prize at the Seto Sometsuke Competition. He also served as a lecturer at Yokohama College of Art and Design and, in 2005, was appointed a juror for the Traditional Art Crafts New Works Exhibition.
