The elegant Camellia blossoms wide on the white porcelain of this vase by Tsukamoto Shiro enclosed in the original signed wooden box title Saiji Tsubaki-mon Kabin. It is 15 cm (6 inches) diameter, 26.5 cm (10-1/2 inches) tall and in excellent condition.
Tsukamoto Shiro (1927-2012) was born to a long line of potters, his father being Tsukamoto Ninsaburo. He was sent to Toyama to work in a factory at the age of 14 from 1942 until wars end. In 1945 he entered a ceramic factory where he researched porcelain techniques and remained there until building a kiln in his home in 1983. He was anmed a holder of intangible cultural properties (a kind of Living National Treasure) by Toki city in 1992.
