A richly colored Basho leaf made to hold poem cards by Takahashi Keiseki enclosed in the original signed wooden box titled Shoyo-shiki Tanzaku Kake. Carved in the form of a gently curling banana leaf, this wooden tanzaku-kake (short-poem hanging display) exemplifies the playful refinement characteristic of scholar furnishings. The surface is worked with great sensitivity: each vein and subtle undulation of the leaf is rendered with rhythmic knife marks, preserving the natural gesture of growth rather than imposing rigid symmetry. The carved hook at the top recalls a stem just severed from its stalk, while the softly spiraling lower tip suggests a leaf caught by breeze or the slow curl of age. It is 68.5 x 14 x 2 cm (27 x 5-1/2 x 1 inches) and in excellent condition.
The motif of the banana leaf (shōyō, 蕉葉) has long been associated with literati culture. In East Asia, the banana plant appears in paintings and poetry as a symbol of quiet study, impermanence, and the sound of rain—the soft patter on broad leaves evoking introspection and solitude. A single poem hung upon such a form becomes not only text but atmosphere. This work merges function and poetic metaphor. When bearing a seasonal verse or inked card, the piece evokes a moment suspended in time: a fleeting thought held against the enduring grain of wood. Its warm patina and careful modeling invite handling and contemplation, reminding the viewer that scholar objects were not merely decorative—they were companions in the slow culture of writing, reading, and reflection.
