A large flaring bowl in black dress with a nobori fuji design by Yokoi Beikin enclosed in the original signed wooden box dating from the beginning of the 20th century. It is 13 cm (5-1/4 inches) diameter, 7.5 cm (3 inches) tall and in excellent condition, stamped on the base Beikin.
Born in 1885 in Atsuta, Nagoya, into a family engaged in the trade of antiquities. He studied painting under Ishikawa Ryūjō and conducted research at the kiln sites of Seto and Mino, later learning ceramic techniques at the Yosamu Kiln. In 1908, he opened the utensil shop Beikindō, and in 1923 purchased the Shinonome kiln together with its craftsmen, establishing the Beikin ware kiln and thereafter dedicating himself fully to ceramic production. Through his work as an antiquities dealer, he had frequent access to masterpieces of classical art, which he absorbed and reflected in his own ceramics. He produced a full range of tea wares, leaving behind works of such refinement that they rival those of professional potters. He passed away at the young age of 56 in 1941.
