Grape Design Exhibited Vase ー武田 敏男 "鉄銅彩葡萄文鉢"

A large open vessel decorated with grapes by Takeda Toshio Exhibited at the 37th Nihon Dento Kogeiten National Traditional Crafts Exhibition in 1990 published page 69 figure 145 of the catalog.  It is 44 cm (17-1/2 inches) diameter, 14 cm (5-1/2 inches) tall and in excellent condition, enclosed in the original signed wooden box titled Tetsu-Do-Sai Budo-mon Hachi.

Takeda Toshio was born in Takaoka City, Toyama prefecture on the West Coast of Japan in 1932.  In 1955 he graduated the Kanazawa Kogei Art University, and followed that up with a year in the schools Research department before heading to Kyoto where he studied under Yonezawa Soho, and was first accepted into the Nitten National Art Exhibition.  In 1957 he returned to Kanazawa, where he worked directly under Kitade Tojiro.  In 1960 he moved to Ibaraki to study under (future) Living National Treasure Tamura Koichi.  In 1963 he moved to Nagoya to research glaze development at the Nagoya Industrial Training Facility, finally settling in Mashiko in 1964, where he built his kiln.  As with this piece, he has exhibited with the Nihon Dento Kogei Ten National Crafts Exhibition, The Nihon Togei Ten National Ceramics Exhibition, as well as the aforementioned Nitten National Art Exhibition.  A piece which toured North America in 1971 is held in the Kyoto National Museum of Modern Art.
