A striking surface treatment on this vessel by Yamato Kiyoshi enclosed in the original signed wooden box titled Yakishime Kaki. Reminiscent of Kasama ware, the entire raw Hagi clay surface is engraved with lines, like some enigmatic rune-stone, the reading long lost to history. Not what we expect from a Hagi based artist, but a refereshing look at the material. It is 32 x 19 x 24 cm (12-3/4 x 7-1/2 x 9-1/2 inches) and is in excellent condition.
Born in Yamaguchi Prefecture in 1953, Yamato Kiyoshi began studying ceramics under his father, Yamato Hiroshi, in 1974. Following his father's death two years later, he inherited the Hase Shōryokugama kiln and established himself as one of Yamaguchi's leading ceramic artists. He has held numerous solo exhibitions at major department stores throughout Japan, including Takashimaya, Mitsukoshi, Tokyu, Sogo, Daimaru, and Keio. A frequent exhibitor at the Japan Ceramic Art Exhibition and the Japan Traditional Art Crafts Exhibition, he received the Grand Prize at the Tanabe Museum of Art's Tea Ceremony Forms Exhibition in 1994 for his Yakishime Incised Flower Vessel, along with numerous other awards from the Japan Kōgei Association. In 2000 he established Meizengama at his home studio, and in 2005 relocated the traditional climbing kiln from Hase Shōryokugama to continue its legacy. His work has also been exhibited internationally, including at the Helsinki City Art Museum and in the United Kingdom.
