A refined set of six contemporary porcelain cups by Matsumura Jun, enclosed in the original signed wooden box titled cup rss. In this compact group, Matsumura explores the balance between pure vessel form and sculptural intervention. The softly rounded bodies rise from sharply articulated bases, where subtle faceting gathers into a tripod-like footing that anchors each cup with quiet stability. Above this structured base, the porcelain walls swell outward before drawing inward to a gently flared rim, creating a continuous curve that contrasts with the crisp geometry below. The luminous white surface emphasizes the clarity of the form, allowing light to move smoothly across the porcelain while shadows collect along the folded planes near the foot. Though modest in scale, the cups reveal the same structural logic found throughout Matsumura’s practice—forms that feel at once natural and precisely engineered. Each cup measures approximately 5.8 cm (2-1/4 inches) in diameter and 5 cm (2 inches) in height, and the set remains in excellent condition, acquired directly from the artist.
Matsumura Jun was born in Chiba Prefecture on the outskirts of Tokyo in 1986. He graduated from the University of South Alabama in 2010, and graduated the Tajimi Municipal Ceramics Research Facility in 2015, then went on to the Utatsuyama Research Facility in Kanazawa, leaving there in 2018. His transcendent, innovative forms have set the heart of the ceramic world racing and he has been awarded at the exhibition Tradition and Innovation-Japanese Ceramics Now as well as the 3rd Triennale of KOGEI in Kanazawa and have been presented at TEFAF in Maastricht, Art Fair Tokyo in 2018, Art Collect in London and Art Kyoto in 2019.
