A brood of monkeys playfully circles mammas back as she plunders a basket of peaches, the ring formed by their tiny bodies made to support a crystal ball. The boxwood carving is signed Kogetsu underneath. It is expertly crafted, measuring 6 x 5.4 x 6.5 cm and likely dates from the later Edo to Meiji periods, (19th century).
