Okayasu Manami 岡安 真美

The distinctive feature of my works lies in the granular texture of the glaze. To me, clay and glaze are like the body and spirit, and through the process of connecting them piece by piece, they are fused together through firing creating a place for that which resides within them through this union.

Okayasu Manami was born in Fukui prefecture in 1984, and graduated the Kyoto Saga Art College in 2007. She held her first solo exhibition at the prestigious Takashimaya in Kyoto in 2009, the first of many group and solo exhibitions around Japan and abroad over the last 15 years.

While studying the history of pottery, I became fascinated by its deep connection with the world of the tea ceremony and its historical significance. I also discovered that the hail pattern on tea kettles was derived from armor. This made me wonder if I could express something akin to spirituality through ceramics.
